J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle & Suckler Show - Thursday 8th March

Store Cattle

A wonderful catalogued entry of 548 store cattle attracted a large crowd of buyers keen to secure replacement stock, with new customers present both buying and selling. A feature of today’s sale was a prize show for suckler bred cattle under 12 months of age, which saw 38 cattle forward in the three show classes, kindly and ably judged by Robert and John Holmes, Nottingham.

The Championship rosette was awarded to an 11 month old Limousin x heifer from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside which sold for £1260 to A Geary, Milton Keynes. The Reserve Champion was a Limousin x steer from JG & PH Thompson, Selside which achieved £1160 selling to F Pooley, Chorley.
Continental steers sold to £1210 for a Charolais x from PW Clarke with other stronger yearling steers selling between £950 and £1100, younger sorts regularly £800 to £950, including a pen of 5 Charolais’ at £950 from M Parker, Langdale. Smaller sorts (6 – 8 months) were £650 to £780.
Heifers topped at £1260 with stronger types selling between £1020 and £1100. Nice yearlings were £880 to £1020 with younger sorts (6 – 8 months) £660 to £800.

A large number of native bred cattle were forward selling to £1010 for Hereford x steers from MJ Waller and Luings £980 from Low Moor Howe Farm Ltd. Yearlings to £870 for AA x J Twigge.

Heifers sold to £920 for Aberdeen Angus x and Herefords £910, Shorthorns £850. Several dairy bred steers were forward selling to £1100 for Fleckvieh, £650 (10 months) Norwegian Red and £530 (10 months) Black and Whites.

A strong entry of 44 young bulls sold to £1200 from FI & ME Little, others nicely selling between £950 and £1100 to include the first prize bull from RS & BA Harker, Holme, younger bulls were £700 to £850 and natives were to £600 for Aberdeen Angus x.

Calves

There was a smaller show of calves forward today selling to another strong trade at J36. Topping the calf section was a Hereford heifer from Colby Farms, Appleby selling to £390 with others from the same home selling to £385 for an Angus bull. Young beef calves were in strong demand this morning with month old heifer calves selling to £300 on three occasions from WH & SJ Morris, Grange-Over-Sands, DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg and DW Cottam, New Hutton.

A new buyer around the ring looking for dairy bred calves today saw them top at £205 for a Fleckvieh bull from JK & A Bowness & Son, Milnthorpe. Other sold to £195 for a Shorthorn bull from Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton.

There was 30 stirks forward at today’s with a young show on offer with nothing over the age of 7 months but selling to a competitive trade. The sale topped at £560 for an Angus bullock from Kirkby & Longworth, Ulpha with other bullock stirks to £530 from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite. Heifers keenly bid for topping at £480 for a Hereford from B & HM Wilson, Selside. A good run of homebred Fleckvieh stirks from SJ & J Hodgson & Son, Colton topped at £480 for 5 month old bullocks. Young black and white bulls saw a flying trade making £240 at four months old from A & S Johns, Brough.

Cast Cows/OTM Cattle

A sharper trade today in the OTM ring with buyers competing for all classes and types, generating a market average of 112p/kg.

Well-fleshed beef cows sold to 159.5p/kg for a Limousin x from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite and a Limousin x from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell; feeding types generally were 120p/kg to 140p/kg depending on age and quality. Dairy cows topped at 107.5kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton with other half meated cows 90p/kg to 100p/kg, leaner parlour sorts were 75p/kg to 85p/kg.

The top grossing beef cow was a Limousin x from MW & M Hodgson achieving £1057 and dairy cow was £888 from JM Barton & Son.

Cull bulls sold to 117.5p/kg and £1077 for a Limousin from B & HM Wilson, Selside.

Several OTM heifers were forward, selling to 151.5p/kg (£921) for a Hereford x from G & ID Postlethwaite.
